The world of engineering and technology has fascinated me from a young age. I have been proficient with numbers from a young age, and the prospect of being a part of building work projects by overseeing, designing, and implementing such projects has always been my heart’s desire. It is this passion to learn more about engineering technology and its execution that prompted me to pursue a B. Tech first, and then an MBA tech degree in Civil Engineering, and I did so from the prestigious Narsee Monjee Institution of Management Studies in Mumbai. The attainment of the BTech and the MBA Tech degrees collectively is known as the MBA in Technology which I pursued at the institute from the years between 2015 and 2021. It was the knowledge, the experience, the skills, and the ability to do research work, that I learnt while at the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management studies, that made me take up work as a project engineer later on, and which has ultimately instilled in me the desire to pursue a Masters’ degree, yet again, in the subject, of Civil Engineering, this time from the University of Western Australia. I believe that another Masters’ degree and that too from a globally renowned university like the University of Western Australia will suitably position me to pursue an international career as a civil engineer, and to be a success in engineering professions not just in my own country, India, but in other parts of the world as well.
I began my professional journey in the field of engineering by working as a technical intern at RSM Homes LLP. My work as an intern involved assisting the site engineers with their on-site inspection duties, learning about the techniques of construction and site management, keeping a recorded profile for specifications and drawings, maintaining a schedule for the site workers who would be reporting to work daily, and I would also follow up with the contractors and site workers everyday and communicate all of this, to the site engineer. I also worked as an intern at Maitri Realtors, where I inspected the safety standards and the quality standards at the site of construction, reported timely, supervised concrete tube testing and shuttering work for columns, beams, and slabs, provided the sales department with assistance, when it came to the sale of apartment units, onboarded site material suppliers and new clients, and reported about the timely completion of duties at the site.
The above experience was followed by a foray into the journal of marketing and communications as a freelancer. Max Life Insurance Company is an organization that was I was associated with as a freelancer, where I worked on building relations and networking with people. I gathered expertise on how it is that long-term relationships with customers are to be created and maintained, how human life value ought to be calculated as per the norms followed in the life insurance sector, is what I taught the customers, while customizing product solutions by making use of analysis calculation tools, to enable customers to acquire financial security and achieve their financial goals in the event that a sudden death took place in the family, such as the death of the breadwinner of the family. I proceeded thereafter to work as a management intern at the Maitri and Siya Group. Some of the duties which I performed here, included building channel partnerships while forming new ones, working on lead generation as well as data collection so that marketing techniques could be implemented for the purpose of social media marketing. Researching on construction details and managing client owner meetings, managing project portfolios to facilitate the sale of a project inventory, are a few of the other activities that I undertook while working as a management intern at Maitri and Siya Group.
I then went onto to work as a Project engineer trainee at Sakha Lifespace LLP and after successful completion of the traineeship, I was able, to migrate to the position of a full-time project engineer, a position which I had wanted to hold for the longest time and which I had finally succeeded in doing so. My work as a project engineer at Sakha Lifespace LLP, involved supervising the construction activities which took place at the site on a daily basis. I made sure that contract document related work, contract drawings as well as specifications were being performed smoothly, quantity and field estimates were prepared by me for the work that was required to be done, field quantities were verified by me, and I made sure to get the work completed on time. A few of the other work-related duties that I happen to undertake in my role as a full-time project engineer, are, maintaining a job log daily for all the work that is being completed at the site, noting down the minutes of all the meetings that take place, etc. My role as a project engineer is intellectually stimulating, and rigorous, and it keeps me on my toes while helping me to learn new skills, concepts, and techniques, pertaining to the subject of civil engineering every day. Indeed, much of the knowledge that I had acquired during my years at University, I have been able, to apply to the work that I have been assigned to do as a project engineer at Sakha Lifespace LLP. Apart from the professional work I have done, in the domain of project engineering, I have also been a part of projects such as Concrete Canoe Vikrant, and Steel Bridge Setu 2.0. The project details for Concrete Canoe Vikrant were presented at the American Society for Civil Engineer’s conference which took place in 2017 at Charlotte in North Carolina in the USA. During the first project I constructed an 18 feet canoe that was capable of floating in water, while in the second, I was involved in the building of a bridge that was 20 feet in length and which was constructed using steel bars, and which could handle a load of 1 ton.
My core strengths, lie in my leadership abilities, entrepreneurship, project management, team-work and decision-making abilities. I also have excellent computational skills and I am well-versed with the use of MS Office and Google Docs and AutoCAD. My work as a professional project engineer till date has been hugely rewarding, but I believe that the time has come to take a break from professional duties and focus instead on the acquisition of new knowledge, techniques, and expertise in civil engineering. This is why I am now eager to pursue a Masters’ degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Western Australia. Such a degree program, will I believe, expose me to some of the best minds in the world of engineering and will help me to gain important international perspectives and insights on how civil engineering projects ought to be undertaken.
