Adages about the financial prudence of the Indian ‘Baniya’ community (traditional traders) are often part of the colloquial lore in India. The community made up for almost half of Indian Billionaires (Forbes,2018) and no one was surprised. I am a proud part fo this community and have used my trade acumen legacy since formative years; undeterred by the lack of any financial inheritance. Born and brought up in a small town of Rajasthan in the Bania community, discussion revolving around money and profitability have always been an intrinsic part of my life while growing up. Escapism from poverty was the only motivation for me to study in my childhood. I was persistently inquisitive and my academic record displays consistency and diligence throughout my scholarly life.
I discovered at an early age about my knack for strategy and management. Good understanding of real-life scenario has resulted in my winning participation in various business-related events and competitions. I am proud of the fact that I am the only graduate in the family who holds a professional degree and has come out of the small town to study and earn. My only aim in college was to get a job, which could help me stabilize my family finances
Professional Synopsis
On the work front, I learned about team dynamics and organizational structure while working across various positions. I started my professional promenade as a Graduate Engineer trainee in one of the leading construction MNC in India, Shapoorji Pallonji (SP), managing the operational procedure for Adhoc support. In the beginning, I worked at the Secretariat project in MP, India, and as a finishing engineer in a 5-star Hilton hotel project in heart of the Riyadh city. While I was initially working as KSA, my dedication towards job led the management to promote me as a Project coordinator. I have thoroughly enjoyed the ‘learning at work’ process at Shapoorji whilst picking up integral people management and project coordination skills.
As a construction professional, I got the exposure to work in different environments, functions, and roles ranging from leading a team of Engineers, Supervisors; from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. I also relished conducting a recruitment drive in the Philippines and India to presenting cashflows and progress status to VP of the company; a process which was not akin to my knowledge purview yet I volunteered for. My job at SP enabled me to work in multiple verticals of construction, be it planning, site execution, contracts, and other project management domains. The multifaceted experiences in a short span of my career have undoubtedly aggrandised my professional skill set holistically.
Why Executive MBA
In today’s competitive environment, companies seek leadership attributes and potential to rise from the mid-level executives. Coming from a Civil engineering background and with over 5 years of rigorous working in International settings: managing resources, manpower, and materials; studying a comprehensive MBA curriculum is a logical step for my academia. Similarly working alongside competitive individuals across streams will provide me with a global perspective along with an elaborate course design. Being mentored by prominent faculty will ensure the experience will be enriching. It is an opportune time, in my opinion, to uptake my higher education and compliment it with my extensive on-site experience.
The Executive Program in Management from IIM Bangalore will help me to accelerate my career in a similar field with enhanced vision and abilities. While enrolling in the MBA program, I foresee a personal transition into a skilled leader with a robust grasp on management practice which will aid me in carving a better professional future for myself. My deep functional knowledge and operational excellence will help to deploy my abilities and to comprehend the industry practice. I am confident that management education will also help me to develop my entrepreneurial instincts and to assist my family in scaling our family business of Kota stone processing, a micro processing unit, registered under MSME status with the Govt. of India.
